Young Carers - Introduction
There are approximately 700,000 Young Carers in the UK.
The term Young Carer applies to anyone between eight and eighteen whose life is in some way restricted because of the need to take responsibility for the care of a person on a regular basis. They may be the main Carer, or provide partial care for an adult or sibling. The person being Cared–for may have a long-term illness, a physical or sensory impairment, learning difficulties, mental illness or be affected by alcohol / substance misuse.

We offer the following services:
Our respite clubs are run in conjunction with the Youth Service at a fully equipped centre. Many events take place at club night such as access to computers, games of football, life issue workshops, pool and snooker, drama and dance, arts and crafts, Wii and IT, cooking and seasonal activities. It’s a chance to meet new friends who are also caring for someone and have time to chill out.
One to one visits
One of our support workers can meet with you at your home, here at the centre, or in a mutually convenient place. The aim is to provide you with information, support and a listening ear. We can meet with you and your family together or just you if that is your preference.
We can assist with navigating through Health and Social Care Services. This can include support in meetings, help filling in forms, crisis management or even speaking to the statutory bodies on your behalf if necessary.
Our support workers are incredibly talented at research and problem solving, and if it’s something that we are unable to help with we will do our best to refer you to someone who can.
Individual Funding Opportunities
We have information on possible grant opportunities for Carers where a need is presented.
If required one of our support workers will call regularly to provide support and a listening ear.
We run accreditations at the club nights which can be added to your portfolio. Young Carers have achieved 30 accreditations to date.
We run approximately 10 trips per year for Young Carers. Recent trips include: Westend theatre trip to see Wicked, Madame Tussauds, Sleepover at Go Bananas in Colchester, Pleasurewood Hills, White Water Rafting at Leigh Valley, Bowling, Rollerskating, Colchester Zoo, Dance workshops and Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food Bitesize cookery course.
